How are we preparing for Christmas? For reuniting with family and friends? Are we thinking about exchanging gifts, lots of laughter, dancing?
Will we have to deal with the physical discomfort of overindulging in the celebration the next day?
Will we have a lot of trouble when the sums start to arrive on our credit card for the expenses we have made?
If these questions come to mind, we may realize that our Christmas celebration, although intoxicating for a few hours, will not be complete.
If these questions come to mind, it signals that we have forgotten something very important. We have forgotten that the celebration should be in honor of the birthday boy.
Someone who was born in the almost cold night/dawn, who was visited by shepherds who were in the fields, watching over their flocks.
Someone who chose a quiet place, far from the loud noises of the city, among docile animals, an ox and a donkey, to come into the world of men.
Someone who, during His life, attended many parties. He began His messianic life, blessing with His presence a marriage and a new home that was beginning.
Someone who attended banquets of men considered to be of ill repute, because of their profession, or perhaps simply envied for the wealth they possessed.
Someone who knew how to honor with His presence every environment He visited, whether to which He was specially invited, or in the simple house of a fisherman on the shores of Lake Galilee, where He took shelter.
There is no record of His birthday being celebrated with pomp, with gifts, food and drink, at any time while He was among men.
What is known is that He lived to serve. He defined Himself as the One who was among His flock to serve.
He lived in a city that was almost forgotten until he was mature, serving in the home, doing what was his responsibility, according to the customs of the time and of His people.
This man, who celebrates His birthday every December according to the earthly calendar, deserves a magnificent celebration from us.
Not a celebration of externalities, of ostentation. A celebration in the intimacy of the heart, because He stated that His kingdom had no outward appearance.
That His kingdom, the kingdom of the Father, is found in the heart of every man, every child of God, every sheep of His flock.
Naturally, we do not rule out meeting with family, a thousand hugs, or bright colors in the decoration of a room, to say that we are happy for the opportunity that this birthday provides us, each year.
However, may our joy be true, the kind that overflows from the soul. May we remember to sing hosannas to the one who left the stars to be with us, to teach us love.
To make us feel, deeply, what love is.
And, in His name, may we share the bread of our table, our joy, with someone beyond the borders of our home.
Then, after Christmas, we will be left with the comfort in our souls of having been at a special party, intimately connected to the Sublime Birthday Boy.
