ícone A story about faith

In 1919, in the old Russia, the Communist Revolution gave origin to a difficult political situation. Thus, an extraordinary Russian citizen, who was only 20 at the time, decided to abandon her country.

Her name was Catarina of Hueck and she became well-known by her title, the Baroness.

When she arrived at London, she was pregnant of her first son and had no money at all. She had an uncle who lived in America who told her about New York, where people were supposedly so rich that dollars used to fall from the trees. Therefore, she decided to move to NY.

She worked in a laundry earning eight dollars, from which she used to send two dollars to Canada, where her son and husband were living.

She tried to write to newspapers describing the stories of the war in Russia, which she knew far too well, but no one had any interest in them.

She then looked for help in a charity institution, where she was humiliated and hurt. That day, she thought about killing herself. She went to Hudson River and stood there, looking at the waters.

Then suddenly she heard a voice: Hey, young girl, what are you doing there?

It was a taxi driver.

Would you like me to drive you somewhere?

She replied: I have nowhere to go, nor money to take a taxi.

Tell me the truth, said the man, you were thinking about jumping in the water, weren't you? I can see it in your hungry face.

He invited her to have a hamburger. At first, she was suspicious about it, but he insisted. Finally, she accepted. He turned out to be a very religious family man.

She ended up spending a couple of days with his family. Later, he lent her some money to pay for her room.

She started to look for a job again, and one cold morning, as she walked, she whispered to herself: God, forgive me for that desperate thought I had next to the river. Help me getting a job.

On that exact moment, a strong wind threw a piece of paper on her face. It was the classified advertisement page of a newspaper.  It had ads of people looking for maids.

Catarina felt cheerful again. It was the first time she saw the answer for a prayer that, instead of coming from heaven, came from the floor, blown by the wind, in a dirty piece of newspaper.

She thought: God is strange indeed. He sends cab drives after desperate girls, talks with the voice of the wind, and even gives answers through a newspaper!

Later, she became a very rich woman, proffering Conferences through out America, recounting her story.

In October 1930, she founded the Friendship Houses and later on, in Canada, where an island was donated to her, she created the  Madonna House, a place where people in need are looked after.

It does not matter how difficult your problem is, do never think about suicide. There is always somebody who can help you. And very often, this person is very close to you.

Look around, search, talk about your difficulty.

It does not matter what the lesson is, give yourself to Jesus' trust. He is the way. Wait a little bit longer, with faith, assistance will always come to you.

But do never think about killing yourself.
