In His famous Mountain Sermon, Jesus said that the eyes are the body's candles.

He also said that if the eyes are good, the whole body will be enlightened.

But if they are evil, the whole body will be in the darkness.

Back then candles were used for lighting.

It should be placed on a high place for the light to spread far.

According to an old popular saying, the eyes are the windows or the mirrors of the soul.

This adage reveals the important connection between the eyes and the essence of beings.

Typically, it is through their eyes that human beings notice the surrounding reality.

From this perception, they dictate their feelings and actions.

What men focus on, what they elect to be worth their attention, gives the tone for their living.

Like Jesus said, if the eyes are good, the whole body will be enlightened.

The world is full of distractions.

Without a firm orientation, it is possible to get lost through these distractions and to become futile.

Soap operas, TV series, Internet and magazines are only some of the available distractions.

They are not intrinsically wrong, but they are not the objective of our existence.

Exactly for this reason, they cannot take an excessive part of our time.

The Spirit does not take a flesh body to be distracted, but rather to improve itself.

The best-used time is the one spent in moral and intellectual improvement.

Used for fruitful conversations, staying in our family's arms or being with close friends.

Also in the learning of a language or through meditation about a moral or philosophical text.

It's also of great value the dedication to a cause, the attention given to the needy and ill.

However, distractions are not the only thing to be cautious about.

Worse than spending time with banalities, is fixing attention to deleterious things.

We are living a time on Earth of great permissiveness and the prevailing discourse is that almost everything is normal.

Therefore, it may seem normal to like pornography, to keep spicy conversations or to stay awake the whole night because of parties.

But it is important to be cautious with what our eyes are focusing on in order to avoid compromising our own dignity.

The taste for rottenness, despite socially accepted, profanes the essence of the beings.

To avoid having our body in the darkness, according to the Gospel, one must have good eyes, that is, to focus on the pure and beautiful things of this world.

This includes enjoying good conversations and healthy readings, to spend our own time in constructive activities, and to dedicate to social causes.

The result of this option for good will be a beautiful light that will surround our beings.

Let us think about it.
