ícone The right side of the boat

One of Jesus´last apparitions to the disciples took place in Tiberias and became known as the wonderful fishing.

Simon Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, from Cana of Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others were together.

They went out fishing, but that night, they caught nothing.

At dawn, they saw a man on the beach that, at first, they did not recognize.

He was the Master and He asked them calmly: Children, do you have anything to eat? They answered negatively.

Then cast the net to the right side of the boat and you will find it.

They did so promptly, accepting the suggestion.

When they started to pull, they noticed that it was very heavy due to the huge amount of fish.

It was only then that one of them said: It is the Lord! And they went to meet Him.

The passage is quite meaningful. It has several components that deserve our most careful reflection.

One of them concerns the fact that the disciples did not recognize Jesus immediately.

They, of all people, who spent so much time at His side, following His days, enjoying His bright and transforming company.

Let us reflect on whether we are often not like that too, the ones of us who study, who know the passages by heart, who place ourselves as heralds of His sublime lessons, but, at critical moments, do not recognize Jesus.

We are inattentive, careless and allow ourselves to be absorbed by the chores of existence.

We do not recognize Jesus in the needy little ones who cross our eyes.

We do not recognize Jesus in the opportunities to work for good.

We do not recognize Jesus in the love we receive from the ones who are by our side.

Another precise lesson of the passage concerns the safe guidance given by the Master:  Cast the net to the right side of the boat and you will find it.

Jesus, even after saying goodbye to his bodily life, was still attentive in feeding His younger siblings...

So He gave them the advice to cast the net to the right side of the boat, where He knew there was a school of fish.

Millennia have passed and the Rabbi of Galilee is still among us, as Governor of the planet, showing us the side of the boat that offers us soul food.

His lessons, His example, His tireless workers are the constant voices in the world telling us where to fish best.

How many times do we fail to listen to the Master? How many times have we clearly heard the loving guidance, but have we chosen to fish in the other band?

Free-will allows us to live like that for a long time. However, hunger and maturity will make us think better and start to trust more those who know best.

The message of Jesus is the right side of the boat, it is the side of the net which is full of fish, of the wonderful fishing of the best days.

May we hear the correct voice of the Master in all situations that life presents us with.

Let us be attentive. Jesus remains by our side.

The net will demand strength, work, sacrifice, but the result of fishing will feed us for a long time.

Let us respond to the invitation.
