ícone Jesus’ Invitation

He is a tall young man of elegant appearance. He enters Rome, the Eternal City, with his heart full of hope. He is looking for work..

We are at the beginning of the fourth century, and the young artist wants a place to show his talent and guarantee his income. On the aqueduct’s wall of the city, he reads: “Circus needs musicians, jugglers and actors for performances.”

He sees it as an opportunity and decides to head for the circus before the night falls.

There are quite a lot of people on the streets. They all seem to be going to the same direction. They are women and children, old and young, people just like him.

Looking at their faces, Domiciano realizes they are all happy. “Well,” he thinks, “they must be the other candidates for the job at the circus.” He decides to follow them.

They are heading to the outskirts of the city, and as they go along, the number of people increases. Domiciano starts to think that it would be better if they were not so many.

However, they do not go to the circus, but to the gate of a shady farm, almost hidden by thick bushes.

A man receives them at the gate, and to each new-comer he says: “Welcome!”

Domiciano is intrigued. Even worried about the number of people that are next to him, he still believes he will get the job.

Through the light of resin torches, a tall white bearded man walks inside the place. They all start chanting in a very low tune.

“So”, Domiciano thinks, “they have rehearsed.” They all know the hymn he was now trying to chant along.

The words slowly start to touch his heart.

They are soft words, the music is sweet.

It talks about the Reign afterlife. He feels as if he was being taken to a different dimension. He feels touched. His eyes are wet.

They share out a loaf of bread, from what, with emotion, he helps himself out. After that, the white haired man recalls words and things done by another man, the One called Jesus.

He talks about charity, about love amongst all creatures, about the abandon of earthly goods, about work and the tiredness of the world, about the joy that comes from Heaven.

The youngster listens. No, that is not the circus. He got it wrong. However, his heart says today is a big day.

When the gathering comes to its end, he goes next to the speaker of that evening and says: “I got here by mistake, but I would like to stay”.

The other one hugs him and tells him: “We accept you. But I do not believe you came here by mistake. Someone brought you..”

“Who was it?” Asks Domiciano.

His own heart answers: “Jesus.”

                                                                       *  *  *

Jesus renews His invitation everyday, inviting all creatures to get close to His message and to His heart.

To each one, a special invitation.

Have you received His invitation already? Did you understand it?

                                                                       *  *  *

Jesus is the same One today, yesterday, always. The love that even not being loved still goes on loving. His open arms in the cross of martyrdom are still open to hold the whole humanity. His brothers.
