ícone The greatness of friendship

Have you ever thought about the greatness of friendship?

A wise philosopher once said that if you have found a friend, you have found a valuable treasure.

True friendship is what sustains many souls that live on Earth. It is in our houses and outside them, in the everyday relationships amongst all creatures.

Friendship is so important that it has been compared to many valuable things.

An anonymous scholar compares friendship to the stars, and people who do not have friends he compares to comets, that come and go, but do not stay or illuminate like stars do.

It goes more or less like this:

“There are star-people and comet-people. Comets go away. They are only thought of because of the dates, when they pass by Earth and return again.

Stars stay. The sun stays. Millions of years go by and the stars stay. Comets disappear.

There are lots of people that are like comets, who pass by our lives only for instants. People who do not capture anybody and nobody captures them.

People without friends. People who just pass by, who do not illuminate, do not warm up, who are not present. There are people who belong to the same family and pass by one another without realizing it.

To be like stars is what matters. To stay. To shine. To be there. To be light, heat, life.

To be a friend is to be a star.

Years can go by, distance can increase, but the mark of friendship stays in our hearts. Hearts that do not want to fall in love with comets, which only attract momentary looks and go away.

There are a lot of comet-people. They pass by, receive the applause and disappear. To be a comet is to be a friend only for instants. To be a comet is to exploit human feelings...

The solitude of some people is the result of not being able to count on anyone. It is the result of a comet-life. Nobody stays. They just pass by one another.

There is a huge necessity of creating a world of star-people. The ones we can all count on. Feel their heat and see their light, everyday.

That is how star-people are like in our lives. We can rely on them. They are present. They give us courage in difficult moments. They are light in dark moments. They give us security in dismayed moments.

To be a star-person in this ephemeral world, in this world full of comets, is a challenge and, above all, a reward.

It is to be born and to live, not to simply exist.

What about you? Are you a comet? Or are you a star?”

*  *  *

As desire is a spark that consumes itself and leaves our souls empty, friendship is a blessing that maintains and sustains us in every moment of our lives.

Whoever shares no more than desire runs the risk of being alone as soon as desire ends. Whoever shares friendship can be sure of never being alone.

That is why friendship is usually compared to beautiful and valuable things.

It can be compared to a treasure…

It can be compared to a fragrant flower that never dies…

It can be compared to a star that warms up and encourages, or with light that never dies away…

The important thing is to have friends and to be someone’s friend; that is the only way to be sure we will never be neglected.
