ícone A simple duty

It is said that the true virtuous ignores what he is. For him, what he does is perfectly natural.

We are told by the superior Spirits that all the eternal happiness is contained in this precept: Love one another.

And they invite us to support our brothers, abandoning the ugly scourge of selfishness.

Some noble souls understood very well this lesson. In a recent interview, the maestro João Carlos Martins told us that, one day, a young violinist of the orchestra that he was rehearsing, as leaving the theater, asked to borrow the equivalent of five dollars.

For what do you want five dollars? - He asked the him.

Because I am hungry. - Was the laconic reply.

The maestro not only gave him the money, but he made a promise: You will never ask money to kill your hunger again. You have talent. I will found an orchestra and you will be the first violinist.

He has said and so did he. The Bachiana Philharmonic performed its first concert in 2004, on the prestigious São Paulo Room.

With a repertoire that includes symphonies of Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, they performed in the most important concert halls in Brazil and abroad.

Two years later, João Carlos founded the Young Bachiana Orchestra, with the aim of working the musical evolution of young musicians. Also democratizing the classical music, presenting it to people who had never had access to concert halls.

For this reason, the performances were held in the most needed communities, in various schools and public squares, throughout Brazil.

Today, the two orchestras have merged and formed the Bachiana Philharmonic Sesi - SP, a group formed by twenty-five professionals, who are advisors of forty-five musicians.

The maestro created, still, the Bachiana Foundation, which theme is art and sustainability. More than two thousand young people receive music education, in several poles, for free.

His dream goes further, in his desire for social redemption: he wishes that these poles multiply up to a thousand, by our country.

The music that nourishes his life, he wants to spread, as generous nectar, to the largest number of people.

His Bachiana was the first Brazilian orchestra to perform at Carnegie Hall. Returned to New York three more times, also performing at the Lincoln Center.

While he carries out his dream, the maestro takes the name of Brazil for international audiences. And supports new talent, investing time in hear, whenever someone speaks to him about a young artist.

Brazil, in the 20th Century, had another dreamer. Villa Lobos idealized an educational music program for the country, having as its main objective the teaching and practice of the choral singing.

The two Brazilians have made and continue to make great benefits to their compatriots.

And, in a simple way, the maestro João Carlos Martins concludes: It is a duty. The music enriches my life. Why not to share and give chances to my brothers and sisters in humanity?
