ícone The voice of the heart

We found, in the Greco-Roman culture, the origin of the relationship between heart and feelings.

At that time no one knew the various brain functions and, in addition, the heart is the organ that records in the most sensitive way the variation of our emotions.

Who has never felt the heart trigger when embracing a great love, when leading a fright, when in fear, when feeling anger?

The origin of the word heart is somewhat uncertain. In Ancient Greece, there was the word kardia, widely used until today in Portuguese language, as in the case, for instance, the word cardiac.

In Rome, we had the word cor or cordis, which derives from a plethora of words that give the idea of the connection between the heart and feelings.

Such is the case with the word concordar, formed by Latin words con and cordis, that is, with all his heart. In other words, when two people agree, it is because their hearts are together, united.

To remember, in its turn, means to bring again to the heart, in the same way that to memorize something means to know it by heart.

As a last example, we have the word courage that means to live with the heart, that is, to live according to what the heart says.

Although the advances of neuroscience and the discovery of how to handle our emotions, the truth is that the heart remains, figuratively, the headquarters of our feelings.

Expressions such as the love that is in my heart, for example, as very common in our society.

Jesus himself used this figure of speech. The Evangelist Mathew, in chapter eleven of his Gospel, records the words of Christ: Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart.

Have you stopped to listen to the voice of your heart today?

In our lives, so many are the appointments, the responsibilities, that we spent weeks without giving a minute of attention to ourselves.

Suddenly, over the course of the day, we feel that almost irresistible desire to call our parents, our husband, wife and simply say: Hi, how are you? I love you!

Our heart longs for this gesture, but there are so obligations to be met, goals to be achieved, that we simply leave for later. And this later never arrives.

Then we remember that old friend so dear, that we have not seen for a long time. The heart is filled with longing and asks you to make a call, set a date, invite the friend for a dinner.

However, this week, the calendar is full of appointments and so is the other. For this reason, we leave it for two weeks from now. But the obligations are different. The two weeks pass and with  them the remembrance of the phone call.

The voice of the heart is sweet, melodious, tender and humble. It is a gracious invitation.

Never imposes and never contradicts itself.

However, to listen to it, it is necessary to raise the awareness of the soul, the delivery of the senses and the detachment of the hours.

Be conscious. Feel. Indulge yourself. Let go.

Listen to your heart.
