ícone The First Ecologist

Ecology is the science that studies the relation between living beings and the environment they live in. This term was first used in 1869 by the German scientist Ernst Haeckel.

However, studying the Gospels we find the best ecologist. Way before men stated to worry about their earthly home and with the issue of ecology, a Wise Galilean showed how to live healthily and interact with the environment.

He was born in a stable appropriate to shelter the animals. And a bull and a donkey shared the space with Him.

His first cradle was improvised in a manger, the parents used the hay reserved for the animals.

His first visitors were men who shephered the sheep in the field.

His holy mission began in the waters of the Jordan River as the Scriptures foretold.

Although He attended the synagogues and the temple in Jerusalem, it was on Nature’s altar the He made the most beautiful considerations about the kingdom that He came to introduce in the hearts of men.

He climbed a hill and pronounced a poem never equaled: the Beatitudes

At Jacob’s well, in Samaria, he used the precious liquid to weave an analogy and offer live water that would take away your thirst forever.

Talking about faith He compared it to a tiny mustard seed that once spread becomes a leafy tree where birds find shelter.

Teaching humility, He declaimed verses about the field lilies that don’t spin or weave but dress themselves with bigger splendour than King Solomon.

Teaching trust in the Divine Providence, He mentioned the birds in the sky, that don’t spread and don’t gather, and still the Father provides for them.

In the midst of the storm that terrified His companions, He rose and spoke to the winds ordering the Spirits responsible for natural phenomena to stop their action.

He compared himself with a vine and His disciples with the braches, Himself distributing the sap that would feed them.

He denominated Himself as the green branch, the one that thrives, the one that gives flowers and fruits. To demonstrate the intrinsic knowledge of the craft He offered Himself as the Good Shepherd, the one who, contrary to the mercenary who runs in he face of danger, gives His life for His sheep.

And He told the story of the sheep that got lost from the ninety nine in safety in the sheepfold, and of the happiness the Shepherd felt when he found His sheep and carried it on His shoulders.

Living in a carpentry environment while growing up, He agonized and gave His Spirit to the Lord of Life nailed to a wooden cross.

Jesus, the ecologist. Jesus, a nature lover. Resurrecting on a Sunday morning He waited in the garden and revealed Himself to Mary Magdalene.

And in nature, amid the council of five hundred disciples, He rose and disappeared from human’eyes, entering the Father’s Kingdom, leaving us the lesson of love of our equals and of nature.

Nature that He taught us to appreciate in its details, to pay attention to the things that may look insignificant but are part of the environment we live in.

Jesus, Model and Guide. Ecologist of first magnitude.
