ícone The art of education

Michelangelo was considered one of the best artists back on his time. He was an Italian painter, sculptor, poet and architect. Many of his creations are among the most well known pieces of occidental art.

Over the centuries and to this day, he’s considered a genius.

His artistic work was developed for over seventy years, between the Italian cities of Florence and Rome.

He designed many buildings and wrote a large number of poems. However, most of us know him particularly for his ability as a sculptor, an occupation that he considered as his favorite.

Among his works are the painting of the Sistine Chapel ceiling and the marble sculptures of David and Pietà, representing Mary holding Jesus in her arms after His Crucifixion.

When we look at his sculptures, the feeling that invades us is that a light breeze is what it takes for them to come alive, such is the perfection.

He is one of the few artists capable of expressing the experience of the beauty and the sublime in such an exact dimension.

If we saw Michelangelo attacking the marble with the hammer and the chisel, maybe we’d wonder if he had something against the marble.

He knew that his masterpiece was held inside that unpolished stone. For his idea to come true he couldn’t feel sorry for the marble.

Where would so many of his works be if he had been gentle with the marble?

This scenario helps us make a connection with our children's education. It makes us think about the best way to guide these wonderful beings that God has put in our hands.

In the same way Michelangelo was able to use his hands with incomparable ability and divine touch, we, parents, can face education as the art of shaping characters.

And there is nothing more contrary to art as to leave the raw material  the way it already is.

While immortal Spirits, it is certain that we and our children already have our own beauty, like the unpolished marble.

However, we need to be molded and cut to achieve the big goal of reincarnation, which is individual progress and self betterment, and thus, make intensify our beauty and shine.

And this mission was given to parents. They have the duty to give love so these souls can get closer to God.

As educators, parents can’t be excessively complacent with their children, they must know how to balance  all the tools that God gave them to practice the art of educating, being firm but also delicate when needed.

Parents must show their children the right way through example, teach them all the time about the true values of life, show them that they can change and overcome their own imperfections step by step.

May we be, as parents, painters, architects and sculptors of our children's souls, helping them to become true masterpieces.

That so they can be creatures that dignify themselves for all the pain they foster, for the peace they sow, for all the smiles they awaken and for all the good they do.
