ícone Leftovers of the soul

David is one of the most famous sculptures by the renaissance author Michelangelo.

The work, a statue of marble that is seventeen feet tall, depicts the biblical hero with impressive anatomical realism, being considered one of the most important masterpieces of this period of the History of the arts.

The imposing sculpture is located in Florence, Italy, city that has, originally, ordered the work.

It took Michelangelo three years to conclude it, in 1504.

It is fascinating to realize the ability of great artists, managing to see a beautiful sculpture in some big stone.

One of them, one time, reported that he kept gazing at a large block of marble for hours and hours, until he saw the statue in there. Then, as he said, he only had to take the leftovers, plowing through the stone, to emerge the perfect sculpture.

Inspired by the wisdom of the great masters, we can take this understanding to our lives.

Imagining that our soul is our great masterpiece, the great sculpture that we need to beautify, we will appreciate that the technique of these artists is genial.

First, the long analysis. Looking inside of the soul, knowing it. Penetrate in its intimacy trying to find yourself.

It is the knowledge of yourself, the key to moral progress. The great journey into the Spirit, seeking in there what needs reform, improvement.

What are our greatest imperfections, our difficulties? And what are also our abilities, our potentials?

By establishing what needs to be removed, finding the leftovers of the rock of the Spirit, then we start the work of sculpting the soul.

Taking off everything that is not essential, that is not ours, that is not part of the construction of our happiness.

Removing the vices, the grievance, the large and small hatred that we have been storing throughout the ages.

Clearing away the mental pollution, the thoughts of envy, jealousy and anger.

Eliminating the sadness and the depression that have brought us so badly, that have already made us give up so many times, losing the chisel of our hands for a few moments.

Some blocks may remain without the work of the artist for a long period… But they just cannot resist the action of time, and return to ask that the sculptor continue… continue.

The process might be painful, uncomfortable, as the investment of the artist, with its tools, against the marble.

The first actions are the most painful, because the block is still untouched in several parts. Removing the soul from spiritual inertia is nothing close to easy.

However, the more we remove, more of our true essence we see, and this gives us courage, energy, not to delay the work of sculpture.

After some time, after some reincarnations, we will begin to glimpse the beauty of David in the midst of so many pieces of stone that were pouring from the crude stone.

That is how we sculpt the soul, our great masterpiece, which begins its journey in the simplicity and ignorance, and that we must conclude in perfection, in happiness.

Our soul, our David, our great masterpiece!
