ícone Lessons from the Eastern Hemisphere

Those of us who live in the Western Hemisphere, were amazed with the conduct from the Japanese civilization, after having endure the disaster from the tsunami, the earthquake and the dangers they were exposed to from the atomic reactors.

In the media, we could not find information of its citizens whining, crying or complaining they had lost everything. The saddness in itself was enough!

When waiting on the long lines for food and water, no harsh words were spoken, nor negative gestures. Only discipline.

No one was seen running to the stores with no restrains. People would purchase only what was necessary at that moment. In this manner all would have a chance of getting what they needed.

There was no looting. On the roads, no honking, loudness. Only comprehension.

Restaurants cut down the prices in half. ATM machines were left with no need of surveillance. The strong took care of the weak.

Young or old, they all knew what to do, and did as they were taught.

When one store was left with no electricity, or it would run out, people would calmly return the items and leave the store.

One of the most amazing stories told, is the one of a Vietnamese immigrant. As a police officer, he was sent to a children's school to assist a charitable organization distribute food to those affected.

It was a very long line. He saw at the end of the line a little boy, of maybe nine years of age, wearing only a shirt and pair of shorts.

It was starting to get cold, and the police officer was worried that, when it was the little boy's turn there would be no food left.

He approached the boy. The boy told him he was at school when tragedy stroke.

His father worked nearby and was driving to school. The little boy proceeded to tell he was on the terrace of the third floor when he saw the tsunami take his father away.

As far as his mother and sister were concerned, since they lived near the beach, they were believed to have been dead as well.

The boy was shaking. The police officer took off his jacket and embraced the little boy with it.

He also offered the boy his own bag of food saying: When it is your turn, there may not be any food left. With this, you have my portion. I have already eaten. Now you can too.

He took the bag filled with respect and regards. He then walked over to the beginning of the line and placed in where all the food was waiting to be distributed.

The police officer was shocked. He asked the boy why he did not eat the food instead of putting it back for distribution.

In a serene manner the boy answered: Because I see here people who are more hungry than I am. If I put the food back they will distribute the food evenly.

When the police officer heard this, he turned his face so that others could not see tears rolling down his cheeks.

He  then understood that if a society can install these qualities of sacrifice and goodness on behalf of others onto a nine year old boy, it must be a great society, a great nation.

A just nation is one in which each citizen wishes for others what they wish for themselves.

When men think and act in this manner, we will have reached the true aspect of Social Justice, for, with Jesus' examples, we will be practicing love and charity to our brothers and sisters.
