ícone My father, my hero

When I came to this world, I was not sure about what I was doing here, until I realized there was someone to guide me on my journey.

One day, when you lifted me on your arms, raising me above your head, I realized you wanted me to perceive the world from a wider point of view.

When I started to try my first steps, with the still fragile muscles of my legs, you helped me holding my hand, and then I found out that you were not going to hold me on you lap forever: you expected me to walk with my own legs.

When I, for the first time, got home complaining about my friends, you told me to sort it out with them, and then I understood I should take responsibility for my acts.

When I brought my first homework home, you sat by my side and helped me, but did not do it for me, I understood you desired learning to be my own conquest.

The day some objects that did not belong to me were found in my school bag, you, with no offense, asked me to give them back to their legitimate owner, I realized you wanted me to be an honest person.

When, one day, my friends left the room and I made some nasty observations about them, you told me we should not make malicious comments about the ones who were absent, I learned the lessons of sincerity and respect.

When times got tough, you were always next to me to help me, and during the happy times, there was always your embrace to be shared.

When I felt like a coward facing the first shock of my life, you told me about courage…

When I wept because of my first pain, you talked to me about resignation…

When I desired to run away from my commitments, you told me about responsibility...

When I thought about lying to a friend, you told me about fidelity…

When I felt in my soul the whips of the first windstorm, you talked to me about flexibility, and I learned to bend but not to break, as the small green stem does when facing strong winds.

When you guessed in my eyes the hint of revenge, you told me about forgiveness…

When I desired to save the world, during the hot days of my youth, you taught me moderation and good sense.

When I wanted to submit to fashion, you talked to me about freedom.

When I deluded myself thinking the world to be mine, you told me about the Creator of the Universe...

That is how, my father, I wish to tell you  that you were always my hero, my friend, my grand master, a companion all through my journey…

You were firm, when firmness was what I needed...

You were tender, when tenderness was what I needed...You were astute, when someone with a good judgment was all I needed next to me…

When I came to this world, I was not sure about what I was doing here, until I realized there was someone to guide me on my journey…

Today, well, today I know clearly what I am doing here, because you, my father, did more than just orientate me, you walked next to me many times, followed me very closely, and walked in front of me many others, leaving light tracks which I could follow.

Today I know exactly what I must do to build a better world, because I learned it with you, my dear friend...

And when I see many lost youngsters, with no direction or hope, wandering around amongst violence and death, I ask God to help them, because maybe they were not lucky to have a father like you…

And I pray for God in your name, father, my friend…
