ícone Brother Wolf

In the year 1226, in the Gubbio Forest, in medieval Europe, a bandit had turned himself into a kind of terrifying monster.

Smarter than a beast, he had become a terrible burglar.

He spread terror and fear everywhere and killed any unarmed man.

No one knew his name but his fame made everyone call him The Wolf. The Wolf of Gubbio.

Francis of Assisi, also known as The Middle Age Christ, went to look for him one day. Finding him, instead of calling him wolf, like everyone else, called him brother.

I come in peace, said Francis. I come to tell you about kindness, love, charity, tenderness. In the name of Jesus, I ask you to alter you path and embrace the path of fraternity.

And finally he invited him to live in the monastery.

The beast-man chose to follow Francis. He changed his ways and, happy, committed himself to the good work, in Assisi’s tasks.

Wherever Francis would go, the ex-bandit followed.

He carried baskets, picked up bread, worked tirelessly. As night-guard, he was one of the best.

Nevertheless, Francis needed to travel and, sometimes, was detained for weeks or months away from the monastery, working.

He would leave in pilgrimage with Brother Leo to spread the teachings of the Lord.

On these occasions, Brother Wolf felt the need for love and the hunger for joy.

Away from Brother Francis, what he would receive on the roads were insults and stones. People called him coward, damned wolf, bloodthirsty beast.

Tired of withstanding such vile treatment and finding himself all alone, Brother Wolf decided to go back to his previous life.

He hid in the forest and gave in to the beastly instincts.

When Brother Francis returned from his journey, he heard the news of what had happened. Though tired, he felt sorry about what happened and went looking for Brother Wolf, who was found chasing a defenseless victim.

Brother Wolf, what is this? Have you forgotten Christ’s teachings?

Oh, holy friend, said the Wolf, I could not endure so much humiliation. I still bear the scars from men’s abuses on my body.

Brother, Francis replied, Christ’s presence is the sun of our lives.

Come back with me. I, too, have suffered defamation and hardship. Your scars are the sisters of my own ulcers.

Stay by my side, Brother Wolf.

The Wolf, with his head hanging low, accompanied his friend and turned into a faithful guardian, keeping his words ever since. He learned to love by forgiving and to live with Jesus in his heart.

The skies of the faithful Christian are not always clear when serving Jesus.

However, the faithful Christian commits himself to Jesus, trusts Him and gives his life to Him.
