ícone Knowing how to die

Dying. No human being can escape from such fate. Nevertheless, we do fear this moment! How painful it is for each one of us to think about the instant of death.

That is so because we have been taught to fear death. It is presented to us as synonym for tears, darkness, and definite separation from those we love the most.

An abyss and a deep sense of sadness. We learn that death is full of mourning and mystery, of mist and broken hearts.

It is necessary, though, to get ready for the final hour arrival. After all, our stay on Earth shortens day by day.

Since we are born, every breath we take means less time on the planet.

Once we get involved by the rhythm of material life almost without noticing, we set aside the fact that we are actually walking step by step towards death.

The end is just for the physical body, as the soul – the essence of what we are – will live forever. Centuries will pass by, but we... We will survive.

We will learn a lot throughout the long road of life. Other lovers, siblings, places and situations are yet to come so to enrich our experience.

And many other bodies will serve as the instrument for our learning.

Thus, there is no need for getting too much attached to the body. It is important indeed, but as a work tool. We must count on it as a single support for our education.

With the help of this body, we live on Earth, we build a family and relate to other human beings. It is essential for the social life that improves our Spirit.

It is through the contact with other people that we have the opportunity to practice patience, tolerance, solidarity and ethics.

Finally, we have the chance to practice gestures and situations that are true labors of love.

And isn’t this our lives’ major objective: discovering, practicing and living love?

There is no need to fear death when life is full of love, when days are perfumed by kindness, when our mind is straight and our “must-do’s” are accomplished.

Whoever lives like that – peaceful heart and sowing happiness – waits for life to fulfill its natural cycle.

For such people, the time of death is tranquil. The doors to a new world, full of discoveries, will open: the House of  Celestial Father.

A goodwill man dies as someone who rests after a day of well done work. There is no attachment to anything at all as it is known that all that was received shall be returned to God.

Renovation is nature’s general rule. When death comes, it is time to give back the World the fragile body that will mix with water and dirt.

It will be consumed, and will feed micro organisms. Other beings will live from it.

And the man who used to wear that body will long be gone: He will open his arms to infinity. His eyes will gaze at stars, lights, colors and forms never dreamt before.

He will walk on with his heart in feast; ready for new experiences, willing to learn and love.

The poet Rabindranath Tagore, Nobel Prize of Literature, wrote about his own death:

It is time for me to leave, my brothers, my sisters.

I have already returned my door keys.

And I give up any rights over my house.

We have been neighbors for a long time.

And I have received more than I could give.

Now the day is on the rise

And the lamp that used to enlighten my dark corner is off.

The subpoena has arrived and I am ready for my journey.

Do not ask what I am taking with me:

I follow empty handed and with a trustful heart.
