ícone Leaving hopelessness behind

The big and luxurious car stopped in front of the small office by the cemetery’s entrance and the driver, who was wearing an elegant uniform, told the security guard:

Could you come with me, please? My boss is ill and can not walk, he said. Could you kindly come to the car and speak to her?

An old lady with deep eyes that could not deny her pain was waiting inside the car.

I am Mrs. Adams, she said. In these last two years I have been sending you five dollars a week…

For the flowers, answered quickly the security guard.

Exactly. So that they would be laid next to my son’s grave. I am here today, she said full of consternation, because the doctors told me I do not have much time left. Therefore I came for a last visit, to thank you.

The man thought for a second, and finally said:

I always felt sorry you kept sending the money for the flowers.

What do you mean? asked the lady.

        The man said reticently:

You know, flowers last so little…and no one really sees them here…

Do you realize what you are saying? said the old lady.

Yes, I know, madam. I take part in a Social Service Association, and we often visit hospitals and homes for senior citizens. In those places, people do miss flowers…

Patients can actually see them and feel their perfume.

The lady was silent for a few seconds. Without a word, she told the driver to leave.

Months later, the security guard received another visit, one that surprised him. He was extremely surprised, in fact, as this time it was the lady who was driving the car.

Now I don’t send flowers anymore, I take them myself. You were right. The patients are really happy about it and they make me feel happy. The doctors can not explain how I got better, but I do know.

It is because I found a reason for living again. I have not forgotten my son, on the contrary, I give the flowers in his name and that gives me strength.

Mrs. Adams found out something most of us are aware of, but seldom remember. In helping others, we help ourselves.

* * *

It is not necessary to visit the tombs of our darling ones to bring our affection to them.

This is because they are not actually there, where their physical body was buried, but they are like birds that got out of the cage and flew free.

To show them our affection, we just have to send them the flowers of our gratitude through our thoughts, stimulated by the fondness we always had for them, and they will know it, wherever they are.

Our visit to the cemetery is only to clean and maintain the place that was used as a passage for the freedom of the human being we love dearly and who is still alive.
