ícone Help yourself and the sky will help you too

A story tells that a Wiseman was walking with his disciples on a winding road, when they suddenly saw a pious man on his knees praying for God to get his car out of the slough as it was stuck.

They all looked at the devoted man, were really moved by him, and went on their way.

After a few kilometres, they saw another man, who had his car stuck in the mud as well. This one shouted and complained while he tried to get his car out of that situation with all his might.

Again, they were all deeply touched, but this time the Wiseman proposed to his disciples to help the man in difficulties.

They put all their efforts together and at the end managed to release the car from the mud. After thanking the disciples, the traveller went on his way.

The apprentices were very surprised, and asked their master: Master, the first man was pious and prayed, but we did not help him. This other man was rebellious and cursing.  Even so, he got our help. Why was that so?

With no distress, the noble teacher answered: The one that prayed was just waiting for God to come and do the task for him. The other one though, even if lost in despair because of his ignorance, was making an effort, and therefore deserved to be assisted.

Many of us act as the first traveller. When facing difficulties that seem impossible to be solved, we accommodate ourselves, and wait for God to elucidate the problem that should actually be solved by us only.

We can and we must make an effort to improve the situation in which we find ourselves.

Some people wish their obstacles would be removed by invisible hands, ignoring the fact that the majority of these obstacles exist because we put them there, and that it is up to us to remove them.

Some of us fall into sluggishness, saying that the situation is difficult and that there is no point in fighting for it.

Others have no perseverance, trying for a while but giving up too soon.

The expression a rolling stone gathers no moss suggests that with knowledge we can always change routes, that we should keep on the move, be dynamic and try to achieve better things.

Asking God is not enough, we should search for what we need, as Jesus said: Look for it and you will find it, knock and it will open.

We should, therefore, do what we are capable of doing, and God will help us doing what we are not able to solve.

Thinking correctly and without complaining would be ideal we should make an effort to get our car out of the mud of our lives, so that we could live happily, with courage and disposition. We should have trust in God, believing He will give us the strength to triumph.

        Let us think about it!
